Argentine Tango

Argentine Tango is a sensual partner dance, originating in the streets of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay, during the late 19th century. The roots of this dance can be found in African candombe, Cuban habanera, as well as waltzes and polkas. It was a popular dance among European immigrants, former slaves and the working and lower classes. In ballroom circles it is distinguished it from International or American Tango. It is one of the most popular dances found in most developed countries around the world. Improvisational and danced mostly in close embrace, Argentine Tango is perfect for beginners to develop a lifelong love of this dance!

Nuevo Tango, the dance, developed after musician and composer Astor Piazzolla introduced elements of jazz and classical music into the traditional Argentine Tango music. The Nuevo Tango dancing that followed built upon traditional steps, but added  other innovations which might be frowned upon by traditional dancers.

We have several Argentine Tango classes at all levels at Allegro Ballroom. We also have frequent Argentine Tango Dance Parties which are called Milongas. Just to confuse you further, the term milonga is not only the dance party, and a reference to the place where the event may be held, but also a form of dance where each beat is stepped upon. Tango, Milonga and Vals (aka waltz) are three types of Argentinean dances typically found at a Milonga (the dance party).
